How to Choose a Scented Candle

A scented candle can give a room a new character. Begin with the atmosphere you enjoy, then choose your fragrance, size and placement with care.

Start with your fragrance family

There is no single right choice. If you enjoy soft, rounded fragrances, vanilla or amber can be a starting point. Explore woody notes for a more cocooning feeling. Fresh and citrus-led fragrances have a different character, while floral notes can be light or full depending on the blend.

Read the full fragrance description. A name does not always tell you which notes dominate. A vanilla fragrance may also have woody or spicy elements. If you are unsure, choose gently and let the scent become part of your everyday at an unhurried pace.

Consider the size of your room

A distinct fragrance may feel stronger in a small room. Begin with shorter fragrance moments according to the product directions and consider others who share your home. An open-plan space may feel different from a small, closed room. Fragrance does not disperse in exactly the same way in every home.

Read the details before choosing

Check the candle size, wax, wick and vessel. A confirmed burn time is a guide rather than a promise of identical use in all conditions. Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions for the particular product. Do not assume all candles made with the same wax require identical care.

Make room for a safe fragrance moment

Place the candle on a stable, level, heat-resistant surface. Keep it away from curtains, draughts and other flammable materials. Never leave an open flame unattended. Keep children and pets at a safe distance and let the vessel cool before moving it. Follow the product directions for wick care and maximum burn duration.

Choose another format when it suits you better

Reed diffusers can be an option when you would like fragrance without an open flame. Room spray is used differently and can offer a shorter fragrance moment. These formats also have their own directions and warnings. Choose what suits your home, your routine and the people who share it.
